World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev came close to another Grand Slam title but had to finish runner-up once again as he lost in an epic 5-set thriller in the finals of the 2022 Australian Open against Rafael Nadal who went on to win his 2nd Australian Open and a historic 21st career Grand Slam title, becoming the first man to achieve this feat.

This was Medvedev’s 4th Grand Slam final and 2nd against Nadal having played in the finals of the 2019 US Open as well where Nadal had emerged victorious. While the Russian suffered two of his hardest defeats at the hands of the Spaniard, he would still like to be stuck on an island with him.

In a recent video released by Tennis TV on Youtube, ATP players were asked to pick a player with whom they would like to be stuck on an island. The video featured many of the stars of the Tour where they were asked to pick 1 player they know, 1 luxury item and 1 food.

I have to get someone who will help me survive, and maybe cook some food, and maybe find some food. So I need someone mentally strong, so Nadal is the one I would choose if I was stuck on a desert island! Why? Because he is able to adapt to any situation. I’m not sure he would be happy to have me there, but I would be happy to have him there.

“It should be something like Pasta because that’s something you can eat every day till the end of your life and at least you will survive. One luxury item would be a boat because it’s luxury and it will help me to get out of the desert island,” said Medvedev during the fun interview.

Medvedev and Nadal have both been confirmed for the upcoming 2022 Indian Wells Masters, also known as the 5th Grand Slam of tennis. While Nadal was absent from the tournament last year that was played in October 2021 and not in March due to the Pandemic, Medvedev had an early exit in the 4th round having won the 2021 US Open just a few weeks ago in New York.

This year, however, the duo will be among the favourites for the title given their exploits in Australia in January. While Nadal is a 3-time champion in the desert having won the title in 2007, 2009 and 2013 and a runner-up finish in 2011, Medvedev is yet to reach the quarter-finals in Indian Wells and will be looking to improve his record this year at the tournament.
