Rafael Nadal was out with a serious foot injury but he got back just in the nick of time to feature at the Australian Open and with every game he became exceptional. He eventually won the Happy Slam and broke the jinx of 20 Grand Slams. His buildup to the Australian Open was very good as he won the title in Melbourne right after returning from injury and that win gave him a lot of confidence.

After his Australian Open success, Nadal continued his progress and won the Mexico Open as he defeated Britain’s Cameron Norrie. Nadal had a 20-0 record until Taylor Fritz defeated him in the finals of the Indian Wells.

It was after the finals at the Indian Wells, the 35-year-old was diagnosed with a stress fracture in the ribs. It meant that he could not take part in the Miami Open and will miss the majority of the clay season. Nadal is not a part of the Monte Carlo Masters and has also withdrawn from Barcelona Open. It remains to be seen when he can be back again as he aims to win back the Roland Garros title from World No. 1 Novak Djokovic. But with almost little to no practice on clay will surely hamper Nadal’s rhythm and it will be interesting to see how the Spaniard manages things.
