Rafael Nadal‘s 13th title at the 2020 French Open helped the Spaniard become the 2nd man to reach the 20 Grand Slam mark behind old rival Roger Federer who breached the 20 Grand Slam mark with his 6th Australian Open title in 2018. Novak Djokovic became the 3rd to make it to 20 Slams with his victory at the 2021 Wimbledon yet another proof of the Big-3’s dominance.
Novak started the year at 17 Grand Slams but with his 9th Australian Open title followed by his 2nd French Open title, Novak reached the All-England Club in Wimbledon with 19 Grand Slams and being the defending champion for 2 years, he was the favourite and proved his tag winning the trophy yet again to join Federer and Nadal on 20 Slams each adding another dimension to the GOAT debate.
As the GOAT debate gets heated up again with Novak’s victory, Nadal talked about his view on the heating race for the most Grand Slams as the trio gets levelled on 20. “Honestly, it’s the same importance as always. The fact that Novak has 20, Roger have 20, I have 20 don’t increase the motivation for me or the pressure. My approach will not change. I always stay the same.
“I do my way. If Novak or Roger plays there and wins, okay, well done for them. I will not be frustrated by that. I know I achieve something that I never dreamed about, and I gonna keep fighting for, keep doing things,” said Nadal who does not envy the success of either Roger or Novak.
Rafael Nadal will return to Grand Slam action at the 2021 US Open
At the 2021 French Open, the trio was back in action in a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2020 Australian Open as Federer missed out the entire season after his fortnight in Australia and returned to Grand Slam action at the French Open. Nadal then decided to skip the 2021 Wimbledon to recover from his injury in Paris again denying the fans the opportunity to see the trio together.
With the 2021 US Open set to begin in the last week of August, it will be the first time that the trio will be participating with equal Grand Slams and in a race to get ahead once again.
