Rafael Nadal has been one of the most consistent players on the tour ever since he made his debut on the tour at the age of 15 in 2002.

He did struggle in his initial years, but was improving at every tournament causing upsets along the way. While major individual titles took a while to come, Nadal helped Spain to the 2004 Davis Cup title where he defeated the then World No. 2 Andy Roddick.

Since 2005, the domination of Nadal began especially on the Clay, consistently winning most of the tournaments he participated, the one’s he did not win were categorised into upsets.

Between 2005 and 2015, Nadal lost a mere 20 matches on Clay, winning 319 matches in the same time while going unbeaten on Clay on 2 occasions, in 2006 and 2010.

The success Nadal has achieved over the seasons has come from yours of intense training and strict routine that he followed right from the age of 12 under his uncle and ex-coach Toni Nadal who coached him till 2017 along with former players Francisco Roig and Carlos Moya.

Speaking recently about the increase in street parties in Spain and people not getting their vaccine jabs, Nadal was disappointed in the youth of his country.

“Young people have been suffering for a year and a half as they want to hang out every weekend. But you must be responsible, he says.

I have been a good professional, I worked hard to achieve goals, but I did not sacrifice my life,” added Nadal.

While Nadal is not seen much as a party person, he revealed his moments of celebrations. “I am not an athlete who doesn’t drink alcohol. If Real Madrid wins La Liga, I will have a beer!” said Nadal. Nadal has been a childhood fan of the Spanish giant football club Real Madrid, where now Nadal is an member as well and is often spotted in the stands cheering the ‘Los Blancos’.

Rafael Nadal is known for his aggressive playing style that not only involves powerful strokes, but also includes his ability to cover ground quickly, amazing footwork and is known to play the first point as well as the last point with same intensity.

While this gives the tennis fans an immense pleasure to experience, it does take toll on the athlete’s body when this level of aggression and passion has been carried for over two decades now.

With the Pandemic and the inclusion of bio-bubbles, athletes have found it difficult to participate in all tournaments and are forced to opt out of some in order to maintain their mental health along with their physical fitness as well. “In order to have a normal life again, the vaccination rhythm needs to increase.” said Nadal about people not taking their vaccines against the Covid-19 virus.

While players are getting their vaccines with the help of both ATP and WTA tours, till the time the normal people are not vaccinated, the bio-bubbles will continue that would also mean no or limited crowds at the matches, an atmosphere that neither the fans nor the players like to be a part of.

Rafael Nadal will be back in action at the 2021 French Open defending his 13th crown while also chasing his 14th title at the Roland Garros.
