REPORTS: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to compete at the 2022 Laver Cup in London
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal
When it comes to tennis, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are not only two of the greatest, but also the most loved athletes in the sport’s rich history. Many argue that their camaraderie and respect for each other is what makes them the greatest to ever play the sport. Time and again, both Federer and Nadal have spoken highly about each other.
But since the last few years, both of them have struggled a lot with injuries. However, Nadal staged a fantastic comeback at the Australian Open where he won his record 21st grand slam. Fans are now hoping for a similar comeback by Federer. The Swiss maestro has given an update about his recovery and said that he will decide on what tournaments to play in April because he isn’t fit as of now.
Nadal and Federer have shared the court multiple times and their rivalry can be considered as one of tennis’ greatest. Be it their first meeting about two decades ago in Miami or the historic 2008 Wimbledon Final or the 2017 Australian Open Final, the duo have entertained fans with high-quality tennis every time they step onto the court.
But it was the 2017 Laver Cup where Federer and Nadal were on the same side of the court for the first time. They represented Team Europe and even played doubles match together- the first and only time they paired up. Many believe that two great friends and tennis legends teaming up has two be one of the most wholesome moments in recent years. And now, 5 years later, this scenario can once again be repeated.
Federer and Nadal to play the 2022 Laver Cup
It is reported that both Federer and Nadal have signed up to compete at the 2022 Laver Cup. This year’s Laver Cup will be played in London this year at The O2 arena and will be played from September 23. Team Europe is undefeated at the tournament and would like to continue the same this year too.
The main matter of concern will be Federer’s fitness. He is expected to return on tour around July this year and given his age, he will have to manage his workload. However, the Laver Cup is annually played towards the end of the year after all majors are completed, so both Federer and Nadal can tweak their schedules to make room for this mega event.
