REVEALED! Andy Murray’s potential path to claim his maiden Australian Open title
Andy Murray
Former World No. 1 Andy Murray is all set to make his 14th appearance at the Australian Open after receiving the wildcard for participation at the 2022 Australian Open as his current rank of World No. 135 does not see him qualify for the Slam automatically as only the Top-108 ranks are taken into the main-draw.
Murray’s track record however saw him get the wildcard. Murray has been a 5-time runner-up at the Grand Slam losing once to Roger Federer in 2010 and then losing to Novak Djokovic on 4 occasions in 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2016. Andy will make his return to the Slam for the first time since 2019 and will hope for a good Slam journey that could boost his ranking massively.
Murray will start his 2022 campaign against Nikoloz Basilashvili in round 1. Having defeated the Georgian on Tour this year, he will fancy his chances for another win. In Round 2, he is likely to take on Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas who could be taken down by the Brit given that Murray is 3-0 against Pablo.
Murray’s first real test will be in the 3rd round against Jannik Sinner who will play at the Slam directly after his stint at the 2022 ATP Cup. Sinner lost in the only meeting between the two and Murray would like to maintain that record and reach the 4th round for the 10th time in his career at the Slam. In the 4th round, Casper Ruud is likely to take on Murray and the Brit will have to register his first win against the Norwegian to move forward.
Andy Murray to take on Daniil Medvedev in the semis
In the quarter-finals, Stefanos Tsitsipas is likely to wait for Murray and after their highly controversial match in the 2021 season, it will be a battle to look out for. If Murray goes past the Greek, he will take on the 2nd seeded and runner-up of the 2021 Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev in what will be their 2nd career meeting.
If Murray is able to move past the Russian, he is likely to take on the winner between former champions Djokovic or Rafael Nadal or a surprise finalist in the form of Alexander Zverev. While it will certainly be against the odd battle to claim the title for Murray, one can never rule out an upset in the sport.
Andy Murray’s path to the 2022 Australian Open title (based on the seedings) :
- R1 Nikoloz Basilashvilli
- R2 Pablo Cuevas
- R3 Jannik Sinner
- R4 Casper Ruud
- QF Stefanos Tsitsipas
