Roger Federer is very near to the end of his illustrious career. The Swiss has done a good job in keeping himself physically fit and mentally running despite being 39 years old, an age where most people call off their career.
But Federer recently revealed that he is very motivated to win big tournaments. In an interview, Federer spoke about how he has spent half of his life on tour and has just played and played for 20 years straight. He even joked he sometimes sound like an eighty year old.
“I can’t believe I’m 39, to be honest,” he said. “Turning 40, it’s like my life has gone by on the tour. I’ve enjoyed so many moments, I’ve had some tough moments, of course. I’ve been tired. I was hurt. I was sick. I’ve played with all sorts of issues. But I feel like juniors were yesterday. Do I sound like an 80-year-old person who looks back at their childhood as their favorite part?”

Federer also shared his experience from when he was young on the tour. He also accepted that it is a lot difficult for the current youngsters to keep focused amidst the chaos, but emphasized upon the need of always getting better.
He said: “You’ve got to find a way to stay happy on the tour, because there is a lot at stake for points and money and fame and social media. And thankfully, I didn’t have to go through all that [with the latter].”
“I’m glad that my upbringing on the tour was a bit more of a normal one. But the mind overall—you finally achieve your dream, and then the question is, can you keep pushing further? You become number five in the world, now do you want to be number three? And then number one? Do you want to stay world number one? All of these questions—for some people, maybe they think, like, it’s normal. Like it’s supposed to be easy. But it’s not. It’s very, very hard.”
The Swiss lost in his very first match at home in Geneva last week to Pablo Andujar and will be off to Paris to compete at the French Open where he will go in as the eighth seed.
