‘I feel like home there,’ Roger Federer confirms playing ‘this’ event in the lead up to Wimbledon

20-time grand slam Champion Roger Federer‘s comeback on Clay at home ended in shock defeat. The Swiss lost in three sets to Pablo Anjudar 4-6,6-4,4-6. Federer was playing on Clay after 2 years and has only played 3 matches in 16 months.

Although after his match, Federer made it clear that Roland Garros or Clay in general isn’t his target and that he is playing on Clay just to build up for the ‘All-important’ Grass season.

The 39-year old has been one of the greatest Grass court players and has won a whopping 8 Wimbledon titles. Traditionally, Federer just plays one tournament at Halle ahead of Wimbledon and that will again be the case this year. Halle has been Federer’s most successful tournament (with Basel) where he has won 10 titles.

After his loss at Geneva, Federer was asked about his future plans this season. Federer clearly stated the Wimbledon will be his ‘huge goal’ and confirmed at he will play at Halle. He also said that the event is one of his favorites. “I am looking forward to it. It’s one of my favorite events, I feel like home there.”

Tournament Director at Halle, Ralf Weber believes that Federer can win the title this year and has been a legend at Halle. Weber said: “Despite his difficult comeback, Roger can win the title. He has shaped our tournament like no one else.”

Federer is a 10-time winner at Halle, and he will be joined in the coveted tournament by the likes of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista Agut this year. The Swiss has gone on to win The Championships at Wimbledon 4 of the 10 times he has won the Halle Open and hence his outing this year could be indications of the events to come.
