20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer completed his 22nd season as a professional player after turning Pro way back in 1998 this year. Since then, he has gone to claim a total of 103 titles, the 2nd highest tally in the Open Era. He also spent a total of 310 weeks which included 237 consecutive weeks and was surpassed only by Novak Djokovic this year.

Federer apart from his on-court achievements has been involved in numerous off-court activities which include various kinds of charity work and is an active philanthropist with his recent charity auction consisting of items and souvenirs from his career whose proceedings went to the organisations that are supported by the Roger Federer Foundation.

Apart from his charity work, Federer was also one of the brains behind the creation of the Laver Cup named after the legendary Australian tennis player Rod Laver. The tournament is created by Roger Federer’s management company, TEAM8, a former Davis Cup player and now a businessman Jorge Paulo Lemann of Brazil and Tennis Australia.

Federer, in an event in Zurich said that not playing the 2021 Laver Cup hurts him a lot but he targets to be back in 2022. “That hurts me a lot,” he said. “I knew that at some point I wouldn’t be able to be there, but I didn’t think it would be this year.”

“One of my goals is to really get myself into it again to come back and hopefully play in places like the O2 Arena in London.”

Federer also gave an update about his recovery and said that he is doing well in rehab. “I’m doing very well, the rehabilitation is ongoing. The worst is behind me and I look forward to the rest.”

Federer was part of the first 3 editions of the Laver Cup starting from 2017 featuring for the Team Europe against Team World captained by Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe respectively. The 2020 edition was not held because of the Pandemic. As Federer had to end his 2021 season after picking up an injury in his knee again post the 2021 Wimbledon, he is set to miss this year’s edition.

This year’s Laver Cup will be the first edition of the Cup where none of the Big-3 will be playing as Djokovic and Rafael Nadal also opted out. Similar to Federer, Nadal also had to end his season early due to his foot injury. Djokovic had already said he will take some rest as the Laver Cup is in a week’s time after the 2021 US Open.

The 2021 Laver Cup will begin in the TD Garden, Boston and will be played from 24th to 26th September.
