The young 22 year old, Elena Rybakina reached a career high ranking of 17 in February in 2020 and has won 2 titles on the WTA Tour. She last played at the Silicon Valley Classic where she was seeded number 2 and lost in the quarter finals against number 7 seed, Danielle Collins in a close two set match, 6-7 (5-7), 6-7 (4-7). Rybakina represented Kazakhstan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics however, she just missed out on a medal by losing in the bronze medal match against Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7), 4-6. Rybakina is seeded number 12 at the National Bank Open and will be looking to lift her first trophy for the year.
Ludmilla Samsonova, also 22 years old, reached her career high ranking of 54 earlier this year in July and won her maiden WTA Tour title this year at the German Open after upsetting world number 12 and Olympic Champion, Belinda Bencic in the final. She was seeded number 2 at the Palermo Ladies Open where she last played however, was stunned by Qinwen Zheng in her first match, the round of 32 when Zheng beat her 6-3, 6-2. Samsonova will be prepared to give it her all at Canada to try and break through the top 50 ranks.
