Sakkari comes into this tournament after prematurely exiting in the first round of the 2021 Indian Wells last week. However, the Greek player did make the semifinals at the 2021 US Open, coupled with a runner-up cheque in Ostrava last month. Moreover, Sakkari has also enjoyed a decent time on the hard courts in 2021, owing to which she has won 21 matches on the surface.
It is not to be forgotten that the top-ranked Greek also reached the semis in Miami, Abu Dhabi and Melbourne earlier in the year and is the No.3 seed this week in Moscow.
On the other hand, Kalinskaya entered the Kremlin Cup as a qualifier and therefore was forced to beat three opponents on her way to the second round. That said, the Russian showed great character in making the fourth round of the recently concluded tournament in Indian Wells. She was denied a quarterfinal spot by Ons Jabeur.
The 22-year-old did reach the quarterfinals of Monterrey earlier in the year but has struggled to progress beyond the initial rounds in most tournaments till now in 2021.
