30-year-old Tennys Sandgren comes into the match after having lost to unseeded Jason Jung in the round of 16 of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships which he entered after having being brushed aside by Alexander Zverev in the second round of Wimbledon in a game in which Sandgren entertained the crowd with some good-natured banter and could only chuckle when he made a complete mess of a smash to go down a double break in the second set.
Australian Duckworth made a good run at the grass courts of Wimbledon, reaching the third round before losing to Italian Lorenzo Sonego. He had also passed the first round at the previous Grand Slam, getting past Salvatore Caruso of Italy in the opening round. In fact, the last event in which he did not make the second round was at the Parma Challenger back in May
