Tennis legend Serena Williams features as Wonder Woman in DirecTV’s commercial
Serena Williams
23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams is probably the one of the most successful tennis player of all-time. Adding to that, she is also the highest paid female tennis player and most of her active income comes from brand collaborations, sponsors and commercials.
Recently, Serena was seen in a commercial for DirecTV’s new campaign to reface and rebrand its streaming service. She was seen as ‘Wonder Woman’ for a bit in the minute long commercial, the first ad of the series. The campaign is meant to launch the rebranded OTT service while also pumping up the core corporate asset.
“It truly is a case of our going back to our roots as an entertainment, and an entertaining, company,” said DirecTV chief marketing officer Vince Torres. “We have simplified our portfolio under the DirecTV name, and we believe [the campaign] will clarify for consumers who we are, while reviving a brand that for some time has been underrepresented in the marketplace….”
“We’ve been a bit silent in the marketplace, and you maybe haven’t heard the name in a while. It’s our belief that this loud and proud media effort will help us break through again.”
Serena withdraws from the US Open
On court, Serena Williams will have to wait a few more months to give a shot at a historic 24th slam. She has withdrawn from the upcoming US Open due to the hamstring injury she developed during Wimbledon. The 23-time champion slipped on court in the first round at the All England Club after which she had to retire mid-match.
She announced on instagram that she hasn’t completely recovered from the injury and hence will not be competing at her home slam this year. Serena last won a major last in 2017 and has since been chasing that elusive 24th slam.
