Roger Federer commented on Serena Williams’s behavior in the finals. According to him, Williams went too far with her rant and she should’ve walked away.
Roger Federer on Serena Williams US Open outburst
Serena Williams was having a great run at the 2018 US Open. It was believed that Williams will be able to win her 24th grand slam and will match Margaret Court’s record for most grand slams won.
Williams was facing the young Japanese sensation Naomi Osaka who was just 21-years of age during that match. However, it seems that the nerves got to Serena as she lost the match in two straight sets.
However, there was a lot of argument happening between the chair umpire and Williams. At first, the former world No.1 got a code violation for receiving coaching tips from her coach, which her coach confirmed after the match. Secondly, in all the frustration of not being able to perform as she wanted to Williams smashed her racquet and received a penalty point for racquet abuse. Already frustrated with the calls Serena called the chair umpire a ‘thief’ and a ‘liar’ and received a game penalty.
During all this chaos, Naomi Osaka‘s first grand slam win was overshadowed due to a petty argument between the Umpire and Williams. People were polarised on the discussions that took place after the match and according to most of them, Serena was wrong for calling the Umpire a ‘thief’ and a ‘liar’. However, some people felt that Williams was right in getting pissed at the Umpire’s behavior.
Roger Federer in an interview gave out his thoughts on the following controversy. He said, “I feel like Serena should have walked away, She did, but she went too far. She should have walked earlier.”
Even the Swiss maestro thought that Williams’s behavior was out of line and she should’ve realized that and walked away. She did walk away but when things after things went out of her hand, she should’ve walked away earlier.
