Serena Williams

23-time grand slam champion Serena Williams is forced to withdraw from the upcoming US Open due to an unhealed hamstring injury injury. She developed the injury in her first round match at Wimbledon after which she had to retire mid-match. She was expected to recover in time before the US Open but things didn’t go according to plan.

“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring. New York is one of the most exciting cities in the world and one of my favorite places to play I’ll miss seeing the fans but will be cheering everyone on from afar. Thank you for your continued support and love.. I’ll see you soon..” Serena wrote in her instagram story.

Serena Williams last won a major almost 5 years back at Melbourne in 2017. It was her 23rd major and since then, she has played 4 grand slam finals- 2018 Wimbledon, 2018 US Open, 2019 Wimbledon and 2019 US Open, but hasn’t been able to cross the finish line.

She came very close again this year at the Australian Open where she reached the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Naomi Osaka. The 2021 US Open was projected to be the last best opportunity for Williams to equal Margaret Court at 24 slams given her age. She has an exceptional record at Flushing Meadows too. She was reached atleast the semifinals of the US Open since 2008 whenever she has competed and has won as many as 4 titles and 3 runner-up finishes.

With her withdrawal, her season is virtually over and she will only be seen on court in 2022. Will she win her record breaking 24th major at the 2022 Australian Open? Only time shall tell.. but things do look very tough for Williams ahead.
