The Canadian didn’t enjoy a great season on the clay, barring his finals appearance in Geneva ahead of the French Open. Unfortunately, Shapovalov had to withdraw from Roland Garros due to injury. Onto the grass season, he made the quarterfinals of Stuttgart last week, before he was downed by Marin Cilic. In the first round at Queen’s, he managed to beat Aleksandar Vukic in two tiebreaks to move into the round of 16. Although it must be said that he lost three matches in as many matches on the grass in 2019.

On the other hand, the Spaniard veteran too didn’t find any success at all on the clay. That said, he might enjoy the switch from clay to grass, which might suit his style of play more. He has a big serve, coupled with high percentage volleys, which can make him a tough customer on grass. Lopez lost in the second round of Stuttgart to Shapovalov, but managed to win his first round at Queen’s comfortably. It is also important to note that he won nine matches in 12 attempts on the grass in 2019.

Both Shapovalov and Lopez have played three matches each on the grass till now. Therefore, they should have little difficulty into getting into the groove when they lock horns. Their big serves will be a big weapon in this game too. Shapovalov served 20 aces in his last match in comparison to Lopez who fired 12. Although the Spaniard has more experience of playing on the grass, the fresh legs of the Canadian might just eke out a tough win in three sets again

Match Prediction: Denis Shapovalov should win in three sets.
