World No.1 and tournament favorite Ash Barty bows out of the 2021 US Open in third round to American Shelby Rogers in the first night match of Day 6 on Arthur Ashe stadium. The 43rd ranked Rogers beat Barty in three sets 6-2,1-6,7-6(5) to enter the Round of 16 of the US Open for the second consecutive year.
Rogers was very confident right from the first set and dominated the rallies. She served well and opened up the court nicely, playing deep in the baseline. Her strategy worked and she got an early break of serve. She capitalized the break only to get another one and ran away with the set 6-2.
Barty wasn’t going to go away without a fight. She showcased her best game in the second set and was as lethal as ever. She served flawlessly and was hitting winners at will. Rogers was completely outclassed in the set as courtesy multiple breaks, Barty won it 6-1.
The third set was the tightest of the three. Barty carries the momentum into the set was was off to a flying start. She was dominating the rallies and took a 5-2 lead. But this is when Rogers stepped up and started taking charge of the rallies. She got a break back and stopped Barty at 4-5 down when the Aussie was serving from the set. The set eventually went into a tiebreaker with Rogers having the momentum. Both the players played some big rallies in the tiebreaker but with a mini-break’s advantage, Rogers won the tiebreaker, dropping just 5 points.
This will be Rogers’ second consecutive second week at Flushing Meadows. She was stopped in the quarterfinals last year by eventual champion Naomi Osaka and this year, she will face 18-year old Emma Raducanu in the Round of 16 on Monday.
