Jannik Sinner enters the 2nd round of the French Open 2021 after a gruelling 3.5 hour contest in the first round which he won 6-1, 4-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 against local boy Pierre-Hugues Herbert. This was the Italian’s first 5-setter career win which saw him save one match point in the 4th set.

The win will surely give confidence to Sinner who had been struggling on Clay this season facing difficult draws on the way in the opening rounds. With Sinner making his French Open debut last year, he looks well to better, least match his last year’s quarter-final run.

Gianluca Mager comparatively had an easy outing as compared to Sinner, winning the match in 4-sets against Peter Gojowczyk who entered the main draw being the lucky loser. Mager won the clash 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 in just over the 2.5 hour mark on the clock.

This becomes the best result for Mager at the Roland Garros as he had failed to reach the 2nd round of the Grand Slam in his previous 2 attempts. He was defeated in the 2nd round of the qualifiers in the 2019 and faced a first round defeat in 2020.

Jannik Sinner

Sinner comes into the match with a 8-5 record for the season on Clay while Mager will come in with 16-10. Mager however has been busy at the Challenger levels and mostly played the ATP-250 events so that could be a cause of concern for him and point of advantage to Sinner who comes in with a busy season on the ATP Tour.

Prediction: Jannik Sinner to win in 4-sets in the first round of the French Open 2021.
