Sinner comes into this tournament as the No.1 seed and one of the top favourites to win the title. After losing in the fourth round of the 2021 US Open, the Italian went on to win the title in Sofia last month. Later, he went down in the fourth round of the recently concluded 2021 Indian Wells Masters to Taylor Fritz.

While Sinner hasn’t won many titles on the hard court this year, the 20-year-old did manage to reach the quarterfinals of Marseille and Dubai earlier in the year, before reaching the finals of the 2021 Miami Masters in March. Currently, the top-ranked Italian has won 21 matches on the hard surface in comparison to 10 defeats.

On the other hand, Musetti booked his place in the second round after beating Gianluca Mager in the last match. That said, it has been a rough few months on the hard courts for the Italian. From the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics in July to the Indian Wells Masters which concluded last week, Musetti never managed to get past the second round in seven consecutive tournaments.

While the 19-year-old was a surprise semifinalist in Acapulco earlier in the year, he has failed to impress the fans. Given his poor run, it is tough to see Musetti doing any damage this week in Antwerp.

Sinner will enter this contest against his countryman as the overwhelming favourite. Momentum, confidence and a complete game should make it easy for the 20-year-old Italian to book a spot in the next round. Meanwhile, the 19-year-old Musetti will need to play inspired tennis to at least stretch the top seed in this opening round.
