Alejandro Davidovich Fokina reached his first ATP Masters 1000 semi-final on Friday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters, defeating 10th seed Taylor Fritz 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

After defeating Marrakech winner David Goffin in the third round, the Spaniard beat World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round and showed great levels of confidence against Fritz on Court Rainier III to back up that success.

The 22-year-old played with a high level of passion, widening his groundstrokes to drag Fritz around the court. Davidovich Fokina’s shotmaking and fist-pumping kept the fans interested throughout, and he advanced after two hours and 24 minutes.

In their ATP Head2Head series, the World No. 46 now leads Fritz 2-0 and will face either 2018 semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov or 11th seed Hubert Hurkacz in the last four.

Davidovich Fokina has a solid record in the clay-court event, having reached the quarter-finals last season after defeating Top 10 talent Matteo Berrettini. He advanced to the quarterfinals in Doha earlier this year, but he came to Monte Carlo on the heels of three straight defeats.

The Spanish will next face Grigor Dimitrov or Hubert Hurkacz and reached the coveted top 4 positions. This is surely going to make a shift in his rankings and will only help polish his talent and skills. When asked about his win, the Spaniard said, “I’m so, so, so, happy you know. Last year I did quarterfinals and then I retired. you know the emotions to reach the semi-finals is super high. I’m enjoying every game, every point in Monte Carlo, and doing my job.”

He further adds, “In the first set I had a lot of chances to break his serve, I didn’t do it, but I knew I would have more chances to break,” he said. “I just said to myself, stay focused and believe in myself.”

His quickness and ability to churn out powerful groundstrokes at whim are the Spaniard’s greatest assets. Davidovich Fokina also boasts one of the strongest drop-shots on the circuit and has improved his forehands slowly but steadily.

We hope that he continues performing in such an impressive manner and he gets to surprise the audience as well as everyone else with his skills and potential.
