“Sorry Maria, I am stealing the Greek,” Ons Jabeur picks Stefanos Tsitsipas over Maria Sakkari as her ideal Doubles pairing
Ons Jabeur and Stefanos Tsitsipas
Ons Jabeur is surely one of the loveliest tennis stars to be around during the tour. The Tunisian is fun loving, always cracking a joke and is a very happy go lucky kind of personality. It is her sensational gameplay and her lively personality that makes her one of the stars in the women’s circuit.
It has been a very tough season for the 27-year-old who is very focused and raring to make a strong comeback in the clay court to curtail her early disappointments this year. Living up to that billing Ons Jabeur was sensational in the recently concluded Charleston Open where she reached the finals. Although the Tunisian went down fighting against Belinda Bencic, Jabeur can surely hold her head high as it was a truly sensational performance. The Tunisian with her movement and tenacity is already looking like a threat on clay.
Jabeur will now shift her focus towards the Porsche Grand Prix which will be held in Stuttgart at the Porsche Arena. The 27-year-old old will also have several other top 10 stars featuring in the event as they prepare for the Roland Garros.
A Mixed Doubles pairing of Ons Jabeur and Stefanos Tsitsipas?
Recently during a fun interview session with Tennis.com, the World No.9 was quizzed about her favourite mixed doubles pairing and her response left the fans laughing. The Tennis.com podcast is hosted by Kamau Murray, who coached Sloane Stephens when she won the US Open back in 2017. Murray here asked Jabeur a hypothetical question on Mixed Doubles as he tells her to imagine that if the Masters start incorporating Mixed Doubles then who will be her ideal doubles partner. To which Jabeur straight thought about the Big 3, she said, “Well there is reality and then there is fiction.”
Immediately Murray replied by saying that she cant choose from Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal as he cut down options for Jabeur‘s benefit. Then the 27-year-old was pretty clear as she added, “I get along with (Stefanos) Tsitsipas a lot. So I mean we say hi and I know his team. I used to work with his fitness coach. Also, he can maybe give me some tips about his hair. I am sorry Maria (Sakkari) but I am stealing the Greek (laugh).”
Jabeur’s answer was hilarious especially when he involved another Greek star Maria Sakkari. It was really a tongue in cheek moment from the Tunisian as she left Murray in splits. Sakkari has previously played with Tsitsipas in the Hopman Cup and also at the Olympics and has expressed her desire to pair up with her compatriot in Mixed Doubles. But Jabeur now is also in contention to fight for the Greek.
Speaking of Doubles, Stefanos Tsitsipas does play a lot of doubles with his brother Petros as they recently bowed out of the Monte Carlo Masters in the second round after losing to second seed and Croatian duo Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. So his love for doubles means that Jabeur is in with a chance and who knows they can make it work at the Roland Garros.
