World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas returned to action at the ongoing 2022 ATP Cup after he chose to sit out of his singles tie in the first match of Greece against Poland. Stefanos starred in the doubles win but later had to miss the singles match against Hubert Hurkacz and he was replaced by Aristotelis Thanos as Greece lost the tie 1-2.

In the second match against Argentina, Stefanos took on Diego Schwartzman and the duo played out a thrilling clash which eventually went the Argentine’s way. Schwartzman won the match 6-7(5) 6-3 6-3 after a 2 hour and 43 minute battle between the duo which ensured Argentina won the tie as they are now 2-0 before the third rubber is played.

It was nevertheless a good match for Stefanos from his personal point of view even though this defeat has now ensured that the Greeks can’t make it to the semi-finals. One of the highlight moments of the match came in the 3rd game of the first set when Stef won a fantastic pointing what looked like a battle of forehands. It’s a good sign as this confirms that the Greek is not having any issues with his elbow.

While it is no surprise that Stef is the son of former tennis players with his mother Julia Apostoli a former Junior World No. 1, Stef’s father Apostolos who is also his catch displayed his serving skills before the match began as he was helping his son in the warm-up before he took on Schwartzman.

With Greece now without points in the standings of Group D, the team is now out of contention to qualify for the semi-finals and the final match against Georgia, who are also without a win in any of their two matches, will be the last match of the 2022 ATP Cup for the team.

This gives Stefanos time to decide on his first Tour event with eyes set on the upcoming 2022 Australian Open that begins from 17th January. Stefanos had made the semi-finals of the Slam in 2021 and will be looking to better last year’s results as he continues his hunt for a maiden Grand Slam title.
