The Italian has not enjoyed a great time on the tour in 2021 after regular premature exits in big tournaments. Fognini also succumbed to the Covid-19 virus in 2020 and is yet to gather any momentum on the tour. Unlike the previous seasons, Fognini had a rough time on his preferred red clay until the 2021 French Open.
Later, the 34-year-old also got ousted in the third round of recently concluded 2021 Wimbledon by Andrey Rublev. He then got knocked out in the first round at the Swedish Open by Roberto Baena.
Jan-Lennard Struff defeated the top seed, Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the first round at Halle played some spectacular tennis to defeat the Russian. In the 2021 French Open, he reached the fourth round, losing to Diego Schwartzman. The German also defeated Andrey Rublev in a five-set thriller in the first round of that tournament.
This was, however, months ago and he has now lost out in the first round of 3 consecutive tournaments and since, he is on a very poor streak of form.
