‘The American Dream’ US Open to release a special documentary on Venus and Serena Williams’ historic meeting in the 2001 US Open Finals
Venus and Serena Williams at the 2001 US Open Finals
Venus Williams and Serena Williams have been two of the most dominant athletes in the world of tennis. Not only have they won individual honours, but the duo also paired up to win Doubles majors and bring USA medals at the Olympics as well. Venus turned Pro in October 1994 at the age of 14 and Serena followed her elder sister the next year in October 1995.
While Serena won her first career Grand Slam title at the 1999 US Open, Venus won her first at the 2000 Wimbledon Championships. The sisters however had already captured the 1999 French Open Doubles title together and Serena won the double at the 1999 US Open winning the singles and then winning the doubles with her elder sister.
So far in their illustrious careers, Serena has won 6 US Open titles, a shared record with American great Chris Evert. Serena has also won two Doubles and 1 Mixed-Doubles title at the US Open with the doubles win coming with Venus. Venus has 2 US Open titles in both the singles and doubles.
US Open has decided to honour the two champions with a special documentary around their 2001 US Open finals meeting which became the first women’s singles finals ever to be broadcasted in prime time. Apart from that, it was the first Grand Slam final to be played between siblings in more than a century and also had the honour of being the first Grand Slam final that was played between two players of colour.
“People of colour weren’t allowed to play in a sanctioned tournament until the ’50s. In 1973, women couldn’t even get credit cards. Can you imagine if Venus or Serena couldn’t get a credit card without a male signing for it?” WTA founder Billie Jean King had said ahead of the finals which took place at the Arthur Ashe Arena, named after the legendary Arthur Ashe who remains the only man of colour to win a men’s major at the Australian Open (1975), Wimbledon (1970) and the US Open (1968).
To highlight the importance of the historic finals once again for the new generation of fans, the official Youtube channel of the US Open Tennis will release a special documentary around the finals with the premier set for 5th March.
Head to Head record of Venus against Serena Williams
The siblings have clashed on the court a total of 31 times with Serena winning 19 of the duels while Venus emerged victorious in 12 of them. They have played on hardcourts, grass, clay and on the carpet as well. The first on-court meeting between them took place in the 2nd round of the 1998 Australian Open where Venus won in straight-sets. Their last meeting came in the 2nd round of the 2020 Lexington Open where Serena won.
Venus won the first three meetings before Serena defeated her sister in the finals of the 1999 Grand Slam Cup to register her first win against her sister. The duo has clashed in 12 finals during their career with Serena leading 9-3 in their finals meetings on the Tour which also include Grand Slam finals.
