World No. 102 Nick Kyrgios had a rollercoaster ride at the Sunshine Double this year. Despite making it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 Indian Wells Masters and the Round of 16 of the 2022 Miami Masters, Nick also had to pay massive fines for his poor conduct on the court during his last match at both the tournaments.

Nick’s exit from Indian Wells came with a defeat against eventual runner-up Rafael Nadal while he lost to Jannik Sinner in Miami. While it was his own anger issues that saw him smash his racquet and bounce it across the court that narrowly missed the ball kid although it was an unusual bounce that the racquet took, it was a completely different story in Miami.

After the chair umpire Carlos Bernardes‘ walkie-talkie went off in the middle of the match, Nick made some comments about poor umpiring to one of his friends in the crowd. It was not taken well by the umpire and with both parties stroking each other’s ego, Nick’s subsequent behaviour of smashing his racquet and hurling abuses.

Nick’s actions meant he played it in the hands of the chair umpire who was ready to hand Nick a point penalty during the first set tiebreaker and a game penalty even before the second set began giving Sinner a 1-0 advantage on Nick’s serve.

“For the vast part of the match, Carlos Bernardes got it spot on. He gave Nick a little bit of leeway in the first set but if you behave like that you have to face the consequences. The biggest obstacle Kyrgios had was his opponent. It was a proper circus out here. There were a lot of distractions, a lot of opportunities for Sinner to lose concentration and he didn’t do that,” said former World No. 4 and British No. 1 Tim Henman commenting on Prime Video.
