Carlos Alcaraz etched his name in the history books by winning his maiden Masters 1000 title at the Miami Open. The Spaniard broke many records with his stunning victory, he became the youngest champion in the tournament’s history and was also the third-youngest player to win a Masters title, behung Micahel Chang and Rafael Nadal.
Being the first Spanish male player to win a title in Miami, Alcaraz has received huge praise from his country. The mayor of Huelva, Gabriel Cruz, has confirmed that Alcaraz will be competing at the ninety-seventh edition of the Copa del Rey, Spain’s oldest tennis tournament. The mayor lavished praise on Alcaraz by proclaiming him as the ‘sensation of world tennis’ and also a successor to Rafael Nadal. Copa del Rey is one of the oldest trophies that are disputed in Spain, and its former winners include the likes of Nadal, David Ferrer and Carlos Moya.
“We will have in Huelva the sensation of world tennis today, a young man who can mark an era in world tennis and who, after his recent victory in the Masters 1000 in Miami, which has placed him with Only 18 years old in eleventh place in the ATP ranking, he wins integers as successor to Rafa Nadal,” the mayor said as quoted by huelva24.
“We can only congratulate and congratulate the board of directors of the Real Club Recreativo de Tenis that with this announcement fulfills its promise to reinforce its exhibition tournament this year with an attractive and reference poster with the best tennis players of the moment,” he added.
Alcaraz will be headline the event, along with Pablo Carreno Busta and Daniel Rincón. The tournament is initially scheduled to be held on June 7th and 8th, but they have gone to great lengths to adjust a possible scheduling change to June 9th and 10th- in case Alcaraz reaches the semi-finals at the French Open.
Carlos Alcaraz to kick start his clay-court season at Monte Carlo Masters
After a stellar spring hard court season, Alcaraz will be looking to stake his domination further as the clay-court season begins. With clay being his forte, the 18-year-old will be looking to make a debut in the top 10. With a stunning string of results capped off by a title win in Miami, Alcaraz reached a career-high ranking of 11th place. He is just 29 points behind World No.10 Cameron Norrie, and with not many points to defend, a breakthrough into the top 10 seems imminent sooner or later.
Alcaraz will begin his Golden Swing by making his debut at the Monte Carlo Masters, which begins on April 12th. Alcaraz will be heading into the tournament as one of the favorites, but it is a stacked field in Monte Carlo, which features 7 of the top 10 ranked players.
