“There are no words to describe”- Caroline Wozniacki pens down an emotional farewell message after bidding adieu in front of her home fans

Caroline Wozniacki
Former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki bid her official farewell to tennis in front of her home fans at Royal Arena in Copenhagen. The Dane played against her close friend Angelique Kerber and won the match 7-5, 6-4 to hear the words ‘Game, Set, Match: Wozniacki’ for the last time in her career.
Wozniacki retired from tennis at the 2020 Australian Open and was scheduled to play a special farewell match in May 2020 in the large Royal Arena in Copenhagen, however, due to Covid-19 it was delayed. The Dane finally got to play the long-delayed farewell match in front of a packed stadium with friends and family in attendance, including her dad and longtime coach Piotr Wozniacki.
After the match, Wozniacki posted a heartfelt message on Twitter, thanking her fans and close friend Angelique Kerber, for signing off her career with such a warm reception. The Dane was lost for words at the overwhelming reception she received on her farewell match, which she dubbed ‘The Final One.’
Caroline Wozniacki’s career in brief

Carlone Wozniacki was the flagbearer for women’s tennis in the Scandinavian region and scripted her name in the history books as the first Danish player to win a Grand Slam. A junior Wimbledon Girls champion, Wozniacki transitioned seamlessly into her senior career. The Dane reached the finals of the US Open twice, the first of which came in 2009, but couldn’t cross the final hurdle. Her shot at winning a Major seemed lost after she struggled with inconsistencies and injuries.
But she made a remarkable resurgence in 2017 when she won the year-ending WTA Finals and returned to the top-3. Her first and only Grand Slam glory came at the 2018 Australian Open when she defeated then-World No.1 Simona Halep to lift her maiden Slam title. It also marked her return as World No.1 after a gap of 6 years. Shortly after that, Wozniacki struggled with injuries and this was hampered further after she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. She drew the curtain on her illustrious career after a third-round exit at the 2020 Australian Open.
However, Wozniacki has left her fans guessing and teased about a possible comeback to tour. During a press conference after her farewell match in Copenhagen, the former World No.1 hinted at a possible u-turn on her retirement saying the cryptic words ‘never say never.’
“Right now I do not think so, but never say never. One never knows what the future will bring. I never think anyone would have thought we would be sitting at home for two years because of a pandemic. So something the last couple of years has taught me is that you never know anything with certainty,” Wozniacki said.
