“There’s nobody in the world who should be respected more than Novak” says Alexander Zverev
Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev
In a gripping semi-final at the 2021 ATP Finals, World No. 3 Alexander Zverev got the better of World No. 1 Novak Djokovic to qualify for his 2nd finals of the Year-End Championships where he has been a former champion winning the title in 2018 against Novak himself against the odds.
Zverev met Djokovic for the 5th time this season and recorded just his second win of the year over the Serbian by winning the semi-final 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3 in 2 hours and 28 minutes to qualify for his 6th finals of the season and will be looking to continue his streak of having a 100% win record in finals this year having won 5 titles from 5 finals including a Gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
During his on-court interview, Sascha paid tribute to Novak with whom he seems to have developed a great bond and both the players share massive respect for each other. Despite losing the semis, Novak congratulated Zverev with a wide smile and hugged him on the net and the German then paid respect to the Serbian.
“I have to say one thing because for me there’s nobody in the world who should be respected more than Novak in my opinion. Where he came from, what he’s achieved, he’s the greatest player of all time and I think you know, people forget that sometimes and I think everybody should appreciate that for once,” said Zverev on-court to loud cheers and claps.
Alexander Zverev to play Daniil Medvedev in the Finals
Zverev will now play World No. 2 and the defending champion Daniil Medvedev in the finals as both the players look to win their 2nd title at the Year-End Championships. While Zverev won back in 2018, Medvedev has a chance to become just the 7th man in history to defend his title at the ATP Finals if he is able to win against Zverev.
The duo earlier met in their 2nd round-robin match where Medvedev won in 3-sets to win his 5th consecutive match against the German and now leads the head-to-head 6-5 after having trailed the German 5-1 after their first 6 matches.
