‘There’s a part of me that always will enjoy proving people wrong,’ Serena Williams puts light on her elite GOAT mentality

Serena Williams is definitely one of the greatest athletes to have played the sport. She has the second most number of grand slams in tennis history and by many, is considered to be the greatest ever. She redefined the way in which women’s tennis was played in the early 2000s and brought a different charisma to the game with her aggressive style of play.
Recently, in an interview with Insider, Serena spoke about how difficult it is to be a public figure. The 40-year-old has been under constant media scrutiny for most of her career and spoke about how her ‘I Don’t Care’ attitude. She said that God made us able to make our decision and thus no one can tell her to do what she wants to do.
“Growing up in the public eye, you really are affected by what people say,” Williams said. “But there was a point where I said, ‘I don’t care what people think.’ God made us able to make our own decisions, and if people don’t want to like me or what I do, that’s okay. Get in line — there’s going to be a long waiting list,” she said.

Serena further revealed that people have doubted her for the majority of her career- be it in her tennis career or her off-court ventures. She added that she loves proving people wrong.
“Whether it’s venture people saying that I shouldn’t be doing it, or it’s tennis when people said I’ll never be good at it, I do think there’s a part of me that always will enjoy proving people wrong,” she said.
The 23-time grand slam champion said that she doesn’t recognize her accomplishments enough and takes baggage from the past. She revealed that she is just enjoying her tennis and never wants to stop doing what she loves.
“I don’t think I recognize my accomplishments enough. I’m one of those people that’s like, ‘If it’s done, it’s done, I’ve moved on.’ Because if you think about what you’ve done too much, you may stop doing it. And I never want to stop. I’m still trying to reach my goals,” she said.
