Two years after retiring from professional tennis, former World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki came back to the tennis courts to bid one last farewell in front of her home fans. Wozniacki played against her good friend Angelique Kerber at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen. She proved she still had it in her as she won 7-5, 6-4 against the German while hearing a ‘Game, Set, Match- Wozniacki’ for one last time and draw curtains on her illustrious career.
Wozniacki retired from tennis at the 2020 Australian Open and was scheduled to play a special farewell match in May 2020 in the large Royal Arena in Copenhagen, however, due to Covid-19 it was delayed. The Dane finally got to play the long-delayed farewell match in front of a packed stadium with friends and family in attendance, including her dad and longtime coach Piotr Wozniacki.
Injuries derailed the latter part of her career, but Wozniacki was one of the most consistent players during her prime. She held the World No.1 ranking for a record 71 weeks while also winning 30 singles titles. She was the flagbearer of women’s tennis for the Scandinavian region and was the first player from Denmark to win a Grand Slam when she won her maiden Major at the 2018 Australian Open.
One of her brand sponsors, Adidas paid homage to the Dane’s glittering career with a montage, starting with a young Wozniacki proclaiming her wish to become the best in the World, winning a Grand Slam and to the moment she fulfilled her dream.
‘Legend of the game’: Fans react to Caroline Wozniacki’s farewell match

Wozniacki bid adieu with a dream farewell against good friend Angelique Kerber, who paid tribute to the Dane on her ‘outstanding career’, shortly after the match. Tributes poured in for Wozniacki on her retirement and fans hailed her as a ‘legend of the game.’
However, Wozniacki has left the door open on a potential u-turn on her retirement decision saying one might never know what the future might hold. “Right now I do not think so, but never say never. One never knows what the future will bring. I never think anyone would have thought we would be sitting at home for two years because of a pandemic. So something the last couple of years has taught me is that you never know anything with certainty, ” she said in the TV 2 studio after the match.
