Nishioka won the first set in the tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3) and Jack Sock was leading in the second set 4-0 when Nishioka retired, giving Sock the win. Nishioka last played in Canada in 2019 where he failed to qualify for the main draw after losing in the second qualifying match against Ilya Ivashka in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. This year, Nishioka is seeded number 3 in the qualifiers and got the better off Michael Mmoh and number 11 seed, Feliciano Lopez in straight sets to qualify for the main draw.
