It has been a bittersweet 2021 season for Stefanos Tsitsipas on so many levels. He began the year in blistering form, reaching the last four at the Australian Open. That run included a sensational comeback win from two sets down against Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals. Moving ahead, Tsitsipas clinched his first Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo and went on to fill his trophy cabinet with the Lyon crown just a few weeks later. The Greek’s biggest moment yet came at the Roland Garros where he reached his first Grand Slam final.

The icing on the cake would have been a grand slam title to his name and it looked like he was there as he led Novak Djokovic by two sets to love in the French Open final but, only to be outdone in the next three sets by the Serbian World No.1. That defeat stung so hard that Tsitsipas didn’t recover in time at Wimbledon to go beyond the opener. The World No.3 has been on the receiving end of some heartbreaking defeats in the second half of the campaign.

Rising young Aussie, Alexei Popyrin began his season well, winning his first senior ATP title in Singapore in February, his only title. He reached the third round of the US Open, his best showing till date at a Major. In the course of that run, the 22 year-old beat Grigor Dimitrov, his third win over a top twenty player in 2021.

Popyrin can count himself lucky for reaching the main draw of the Paris Masters after falling to Tommy Paul in the second round of qualifying over the weekend. However, Popyrin with a second bite at the cherry was instilled into the tournament as a lucky loser after drew his compatriot Alex De Minaur to whom he handed an early exit from the event.

It has been a long enough season for World No.3 Tsitsipas who has experienced extremes of emotions over the course of the tour. The Greek was on an outstanding run in the first half of the season but he enters this tournament with a major dip in his form and confidence following a disappointing performance at last week’s Vienna Open. The 23-year-old was leading 3-0 against Frances Tiafoe in the deciding set of the Round of 16, but a series of errors saw him lose the set 6-4.

Alexei Popyrin has still not quite established himself as a tour-level regular, but he certainly has the talent to do it. He saw his qualifying campaign this week end in disappointment as he was beaten by Paul in the final round, but he was handed a lifeline as a lucky loser and he took full advantage of it by hammering his compatriot Alex de Minaur. However, he will find third seed Stefanos Tsitsipas a rather less obliging opponent.

Tsitsipas enters this round as a strong favorite however, her will need to be wary of Popyrin’s power, with the Australian able to generate real pace off both wings. Although Tsitsipas has the power to match with greater versatility to disrupt Popyrin’s rhythm, the Greek’s current form and confidence calls for a closer battle.

Prediction: Tsitsipas to win in straight sets.
