Tokyo Olympics 2020: Twitter reacts to Alexander Zverev’s impressive victory over Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals

Germany’s Alexander Zverev gave one of the best performances of this year’s Olympics when he defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic who was the favourite for the Gold medal this year. Zverev defeated Djokovic 1-6, 6-3, 6-1 in 2hours and 3 minutes in a thrilling match of tennis at the Centre Court of the Ariake Tennis Center.
Zverev’s victory means that it won’t be the much anticipated Golden Slam for Novak. Both the players had come into the semi-finals without dropping a single set and now proceed for different fates as Zverev qualifies for the Gold Medal match whereas Novak will contest for the Bronze Medal having won the medal previously at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
As soon as Zverev won the match point and broke into tears, reactions started to pour on Twitter congratulating the German for one of his biggest career wins as he now stands a chance to win the Men’s Singles Gold Medal in his debut Olympic Games and is the only German in contention for any tennis medal at this year’s Olympics.

Djokovic looked in red-hot form from the beginning of the match and gave no space to Zverev in the first set and it looked like the Serbian will extend his winning run over the German. But Zverev bounced back brilliantly in the 2nd set and then followed the momentum going into the 3rd set and in no time was 2-0 up in the final set against the World No. 1.
Djokovic, who is famous for last-minute comebacks could not do so today and rather struggled in the final set as the 25-year old Zverev continued challenging Djokovic for every point. After winning the match-point, Djokovic was all happy for the German and the duo shared a long hug, Novak congratulating Zverev and Zverev appreciating the fight Novak put in the semi-finals.
Zverev will now be facing Russian Olympic Committee’s Karen Khachanov in the Gold Medal match with both the players playing in their first Olympic Games. As for Djokovic, he will be up against Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta for the Bronze Medal with both the matches scheduled to be played on Sunday, 1st August.
