“Thoroughly Deserved”: US Open champion Emma Raducanu awarded MBE in New Year’s Honours
Emma Raducanu
Emma Raducanu is a name to reckon with in the world of tennis. The teenager made headlines when she won the coveted US Open title in 2021. Blazing past the biggest names in tennis, the Brit, who entered the main round after battling through the qualifiers delivered an absolutely sensational performance.
The achievement was indeed very special as we don’t often see a world no. 150 winning a Grand Slam. Such was her dominance that she did not drop a single set in the entire tournament. As soon as she won, brands came rushing to rope her in as a brand ambassador.
“This year has been full of amazing surprises”: Emma Raducanu
Raducanu’s mixed heritage also played a major role in pushing top brands towards her. Not long ago, Emma was named BBC’s sports personality of the year, and now, adding another feather to her cap, the Brit has been included on the New Year’s Honours list and has been awarded an MBE.
After winning the prestigious award, Raducanu claimed “It makes me immensely proud and grateful to be listed to receive an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen. This year has been full of amazing surprises for me so to end 2021 with this appointment is very special.”
Raducanu’s return to the court after the US Open title victory hasn’t been very impressive. Moreover, when she was all set to take part in the Mubadala World Championship, it was confirmed that she has tested positive for Covid-19. The good news is that she is recovering well and we might see her ruling the court yet again in the 2022 Australian Open.
