US Open 2021: Venus Williams gets wildcard for the Grand Slam along with other American teens
Venus Williams
Venus Williams, a two-time winner, will return to the 2021 US Open after receiving a wild card into the Grand Slam tournament on Wednesday. Williams, 41, has seven major championships to her credit, including wins at the Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001. However, with her current WTA ranking of No. 112, she is no longer among the top 104 players who are guaranteed a spot in the women’s main event.
Williams hasn’t missed the US Open since a left wrist injury forced her to withdraw in 2006. In 2017, she advanced to the semi-finals of the Grand Slam for the first time since 2010 and lost only to eventual champion Sloane Stephens who won her first and so far the only Grand Slam title.
Other Wild Card entrants at the US Open 2021
The USTA also gave wild cards to Coco Vandeweghe, who has been battling injuries for a long time that have seen the former No. 9 having her current ranking as the World No. 160. Caty McNally, Hailey Baptiste and Katie Volynets, all American teens, also got the wild cards. Emma Navarro, the NCAA champion at Virginia and Ashlyn Krueger, 17, earned a wild-card entry after winning the USTA Girls’ 18s national title.
On the men’s side, wild cards were awarded to 20-year-old Americans Jenson Brooksby and Brandon Nakashima following their outstanding summers. Both are currently rated inside the top 100, which would have qualified them for straight admission if the ATP rankings from July 19 had been utilised.
With fellow Americans Emilio Nava and Ernesto Escobedo, Jack Sock, who was formerly ranked ninth but has suffered with injuries, got a wild card.Georgia’s NCAA singles winner Sam Riffice and USTA Boys’ 18s champion Zachary Svajda, along with Australians Max Purcell and Storm Sanders, have also been handed the wildcards.
