WATCH: Coco Gauff has her fangirl moment with Miami Dolphins star Jalean Phillips at the Miami Open
Coco Gauff and Jaelan Phillips
American teen sensation Coco Gauff starts her campaign at the 2022 Miami Open with a straight-set win over Wang Qiang. Gauff won the match 7-5, 6-4 to enter the third round as she continues her hunt for silverware in the season as she is yet to reach a final so far this season.
Gauff is into the third round of the Miami Open for the first time with both of her previous two appearances ending in a second-round defeat for the American. The World No. 17 picked her 9th win of the season in what has been a shaky start for her with some shocking defeats and some misfortune as well that saw her play tougher opponents in the earlier rounds itself.
After her win over Qiang, Gauff was seen catching up with Jaelan Phillips who was in attendance for the teenager’s match. The linebacker who plays for the Miami Dolphins in the NFL and similar to Gauff has been one of the highly talented American athletes performing well at the highest level of sports in their respective field.
It was a dream moment for Gauff as she used to attend the matches of the Dolphins and now had a Dolphins star attend one of her games. “I’ve been to a couple of Dolphins games,” Gauff said to Phillips trying to control her excitement and also spoke about how she wished the team achieved some great success this season.
A tricky Round 3 test for Coco Gauff
With the win and qualification into the third round, Gauff will now take on Shuai Zhang in what will be their first career meeting. The Chinese veteran comes into the match with a mid-match forfeit from Clara Tauson in what was looking to be a tight contest as the match was balanced in the third set. Zhang then defeated Sorana Cirstea in straight-sets to set the clash with Gauff.
Having reached the third round in the recently concluded Indian Wells Open as well, Gauff will look to move further ahead in the tournament and make a good run to boost her ranking as she is very close to breaking into the Top-15 for the first time in her career having reached her career-high ranking of World No. 16 in January.
