Novak Djokovic has announced that he will begin his clay season at the 2022 Monte Carlo Masters on his website. After withdrawing from the Masters 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami, the Serb announced his participation in the tournament. Despite being unable to go to the United States due to a lack of vaccination against COVID-19, Djokovic was in the Indian Wells Masters draw until the very last minute. He later announced on Twitter that he will not be doing the Sunshine Double in the United States.

However, Novak Djokovic is now able to play the Monte Carlo Masters and defend his championship at Roland Garros after French authorities declared that they will relax their ban on COVID-19 vaccine passes for entry into the country.

Stanislas Wawrinka is another player who has been prepping for a return to the ATP tour. Prior to the Monte Carlo Masters, the two delighted tennis spectators by playing mini tennis in front of a casino.

The singles players gathered at the Monte-Carlo Country Club earlier this week and practised together on Court Rainier III on Thursday ahead of the season’s third ATP Masters 1000 event. Novak Djokovic won the title on clay in Monte-Carlo in 2013 and 2015, and he is playing in only his second tournament of the season after reaching the quarterfinals in Dubai in February. The Serb is aiming for his third Monte-Carlo championship as well.

Meanwhile, Wawrinka of Switzerland arrives at the clay-court tournament after missing a tour-level event owing to injury since March. In 2014, the former World No. 3 won in Monte-Carlo and was given a wild card into the draw.

In his opening round, Djokovic will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina or Marcos Giron, and in the quarter-finals, he might face young Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. On the other hand, Wawrinka is in the bottom half of the draw and will face Alexander Bublik in the first round.
