Novak Djokovic is gearing up for his return to tennis and was recently seen practicing with Canadian player Vasek Popisil, at the Novak tennis center in Belgrade. The 20 time Grand Slam champion is finally set to return for some on-court action when he competes at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship, later this month.
The World No.1 is yet to play a match since the Davis Cup tie in early December last year. Djokovic couldn’t defend his Australian Open title after his visa was cancelled and the Serb was deported from Australia. However, he has maintained his position at the summit of the ATP rankings despite not defending his points from last year.
After maintaining silence over the events which unfolded in Melbourne, Djokovic gave a brief public address yesterday in his joint press conference with Serbian President, Aleksander Vucic. He expressed gratitude to the Serbian President and his fans for their support and said he will be releasing a detailed statement expressing his version of the events in 7-10 days.
Djokovic is finally set to return to action this month
Novak Djokovic has confirmed his participation at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, which begins on February 21st. The Serb will enter as the top seed, which also features other top players including Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger Aliassime and Jannik Sinner.
The World No.1 is a five-time winner at the tournament, with his most recent win coming in 2020. He chose not to participate in the tournament last year.
Djokovic can enter Dubai irrespective of his vaccination status, he only needs to provide a negative PCR test on his arrival. However, it remains to be seen whether the Serb will be allowed to defend his titles at the French Open and the Wimbledon later this year, if he maintains his stance on being unvaccinated.
