“We can’t wait for him to be on the tour again,” ATP President says he is confident about Roger Federer’s return to the tour

ATP chief Andrea Gaudenzi recently expressed his thoughts on Roger Federer’s comeback and said he is eagerly awaiting the return of the Swiss Maestro.

Andrea Gaudenzi was quizzed about the possibility of Federer’s return during a press conference. Gaudenzi said he was optimistic about Federer returning to tour again but said it might take time, given he had undergone multiple surgeries in the past two years. He also added that every match the Swiss legend plays from now on is a ‘gift.

“Roger is over 40 years old. Every match he plays from now on will be a gift for us. We obviously can’t wait for him to be on the tour again, but he is taking his time after the operations he has undergone. We cross fingers,” he said.

Federer hasn’t played a match since his quarter-final defeat at Wimbledon last year. He underwent surgery after he aggravated his knee injury during the grass-court season and is yet to announce a timeline for his return.

Roger Federer is still uncertain about his comeback!

Federer recently revealed during a video conference with one of his sponsors, that he still wants to make one last comeback, but can only make a call on his future in April-May after assessing his fitness. But the former World No.4 was still adamant that he is motivated to make a return and come back “one more time.”

The 20-time Grand Slam champion played only 13 matches in 2021 and spent the better half of the last two-and-half years on the sidelines due to injuries. Federer faced a similar situation in 2016, but made a stellar comeback to win the Australian Open and a record 8th Wimbledon title the subsequent year. But given his age, hoping for such an outcome this time around seems a bit too optimistic even for a person of Federer’s stature.

While there is still uncertainty about his future, the 40-year-old is still committed to making a return to tour again and announced his participation at the Laver Cup which will take place in September.
