World No. 1 Novak Djokovic finally opened up on the entire episode that took place in Australia which ended with him being deported out of the country and banned to enter for the next 3 years. Having arrived in Australia with the intention of playing the 2022 Australian Open, the 3-time defending champion had to give up his title without any defence as he was deported.

With the Australian government strict on its policy of not allowing any unvaccinated person to enter unless they can justify why they have not been vaccinated, Djokovic failed to fit in any of the criteria and had his visa cancelled on the 6th of January when he arrived in Melbourne. After spending 4 days in a federal quarantine policy, the Serbian was allowed entry after he won his court case but the joy was short-lived.

The Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used his ministerial power to cancel Novak’s visa yet again and this time it was the government that won the legal battle and Djokovic was asked to leave the country on 16th January, on the eve of his first-round match at the Grand Slam having practised for it earlier in the week.

Addressing the entire situation, Djokovic finally gave an interview to the BBC where he talked about his decision to not get vaccinated and give his version of the ugly events that unfolded in Australia which included his family members heading public protests against the government for the unfair treatment of the 20-time Grand Slam champion.

Djokovic’s comments received a mixed reaction but one of his statements received some massive trolling on Twitter with Irish airlines RyanAir starting by putting out a tweet that read, “We’re not an airline but we do fly planes.” The trend was quickly picked up and more and more people started putting out similar tweets.

Given his absence from the Tour, Djokovic might actually lose his position as the top-ranked player in the world, something that he has held since March 2020. With World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev reaching the Australian Open finals this year, he has closed down on the Serbian and if the Russian is able to win the 2022 Acapulco Open despite Djokovic managing to win the 2022 Dubai Championships, Medvedev will be the new World No. 1.
