The Madrid Open is one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments played every year on a clay surface. It is held every year in the historical city of Madrid, Spain. It is a part of the ATP and WTA Tours. The event is a Masters 1000 tournament. It became an annual event in the tennis calendar of the ATP Tour in 2002. However, it opened its doors for women participants in 2009.
This competition is considered by many as one of the most competitive tennis tournaments in the world and a fertile ground for the preparation for the French Open which will be played soon. The tournament’s most successful winner and Spain’s greatest tennis professional Rafael Nadal will not be playing in the tournament this time around. He cited still-lingering fitness issues. Novak Djokovic too is not participating in this tournament this year.
Rafael Nadal has won this competition 5 times while Novak Djokovic has thrice. Hence, with the absence of both the legends from the competition, it can give the new and younger generation players an opportunity to win the tournament. There are some exciting players such as Carlos Alcaraz, Holger Rune, Casper Ruud, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Taylor Fritz amongst others who will keep the level of competition high and try to win this title.
Petra Kvitova has won this competition three times in her career. She is the tournament’s most successful winner. Besides her Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina, amongst others will keep the level of competition high and try to win the title.
The tournament is played on red clay surface each year. However, in 2012, blue clay was introduced which gave the competition a new character. But soon this idea was dropped and in 2013, the event reverted back to a red clay surface.
