Peng Shuai

The 2022 Australian Open has been in the middle of controversies but things have looked to turn as the tournament had progressed. After the whole Novak Djokovic vaccination saga that led to the Serbian’s deportation, the tournament came under another scrutiny for their action over activists trying to raise voices in support of Peng Shuai.

Ever since Peng Shuai came forward in November and talked about being sexually assaulted by China’s senior politician Zhang Gaoli, the player’s safety has been believed to be compromised ever since she disappeared for weeks and then reappeared mysteriously claiming that her allegations were false.

Support for the players has been growing ever since and the protestors took to Melbourne Park bringing banners and wearing T-shirts with the text ‘Where is Peng Shuai’. The organisers had earlier asked to remove the banners as the instructions on the tickets state that no political statements would be allowed and it did not go well with many former players as well.

The tournament eventually allowed the t-shirts in support of Peng Shuai and the activists distributed the t-shirts prior to the commencement of the finals between Ash Barty and Danielle Collins who will take on each other in the finals of women’s singles. Over 1000 t-shirts were distributed at Melbourne Park near the south entrance as reported by journalist Ben Rothenberg.

The activists gave out all of their t-shirts quickly and have promised to continue their movement in future as well. Many people took to Twitter to show off their t-shirts in support of the Chinese player.
