Dominic Thiem promotes Babolat Pure Strike racket line of racquets, and he’s currently using a customized version of the 3rd Generation with an 18×20 string configuration.

However, earlier in his career, the Austrian has also used Wilson and Head racquets. Thiem is one of the rare players on the ATP tour who doesn’t shy away from trying different brands of racquets. Thiem struck a deal with the French manufacturers, Babolat in 2014 and since then has been comfortable with the brand.

Thiem has also experimented a lot with the strings. After using RPM Blast early in his career, he moved to RPM blast rough. Today, he is using RPM power 17. He even signed a six year contract with Babolat in 2018. The same will expire in 2024.

The World No.4 is currently experiencing a poor run of form, post his return to action from injury. Although the Austrian made the semis of Madrid Masters, he lost in the initial rounds of Rome and Lyon recently. With four wins out of seven appearances on the dirt, Thiem hasn’t had the best preparation for Roland Garros.

The 27-year-old has been to two finals of French Open in 2018 and 2019 and is the only player to take a set off Rafael Nadal in the finals of Roland Garros in recent years.

Thiem also opened up on how the ongoing pandemic affected him mentally. He explained the highs of US Open victory in 2020, which was followed by anxiety and other issues, when the tour was indefinitely postponed. The US Open winner also mentioned his drop in motivation, before he returned to action in Madrid for his first clay tournament of 2021.

Now, Thiem will make another appearance at Roland Garros and despite his injuries and poor run on the dirt this season, he will be one of the contenders to win the title. What remains to be seen is whether he falls into the Nadal’s half of the draw or goes into the Djokovic section.
