Marketa Vondrousova is a Czech professional tennis player. She has a career-high ranking of World No. 14 by the WTA. Vondroušová finished runner-up at the 2019 French Open, where she became the first teenage Grand Slam finalist on the WTA Tour since Caroline Wozniacki nearly a decade earlier.

She has won one WTA singles title out of four finals. Vondroušová is a former world No. 1 junior, having won two junior Grand Slam doubles titles. She turned Pro during the 2013 season as a 14-year-old. She kept switching to the junior and professional Tour to make her mark as she was rising in the rankings quickly.

Vondrousova’s biggest glory remains her Silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics played in 2021 (delayed due to the Pandemic). She lost a close final to Belinda Bencic but became a household name in Russia bringing home the Silver medal. At the Grand Slams, she is yet to make a mark apart from her runner-up finish at the 2019 French Open.

The current coach for Marketa Voundrosova is Jan Mertl. Mertl is a former Czech Pro who didn’t have much success on the Tour. His career-high rank in singles was 163 while going up to 131 in doubles. Earlier, Marketa had 2 coaches, namely Jiri Hrebec and Jan Hernych, for a long time. Coincidentally, both are former Czech players. As a junior, Vondrousova was coached by Jan Fuchs starting from before the age of 12.

Her stepfather Tomas Anderle, who is a hockey coach, served as her physical fitness trainer. She was later coached by Zdenek Kubik for three years. By 2015, she replaced Kubík with Jiri Hrebec and Dusan Karol. Hrebec is a former Czech professional player who reached a career-high ranking of No. 25 in the world on the ATP Tour. Vondrousova switched coaches from Hrebec to Martin Fassati in April 2018.

After a lack of success with Fassati, she switched coaches again a few months later to Hernych, another Czech former ATP professional player. She also later resumed working with Hrebec. Hernych served as her only traveling coach since Hrebec did not travel to tournaments. A left wrist injury suffered during her Wimbledon 2019 defeat required surgery and she missed the remainder of the season.

If surgery, a pandemic, and an uphill battle to rediscover form were not enough to juggle, Vondrousova decided it was time to shake things up in the coaching department. Having previously worked under Czech pair Jiri Hrebec and Jan Hernych, she made the switch to another Czech, Libor Salaba.
