20-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal will lock horns against World No.2 Daniil Medvedev in the 2022 Australian Open Men’s Singles Final. The Final will be played on Sunday, January 30 in the night session at the infamous Rod Laver Arena as Nadal will look to script history by becoming the first man to win 21 majors while Medvedev if he wins will become the new World No.1.
Nadal was not the favorite to go deep in the tournament as he was staging a comeback. On the other hand, after Novak Djokovic’s exit, Medvedev became the automatic favorite to win the title. If the Russian beats Nadal, he will become the only player in the open era to win a major immediately after winning his first grand slam title.
Needless to say, officiating a tennis match at a grand slam is never an easy job and when it comes to the final, it is probably one of the toughest jobs given the stakes. And for the 2022 Australian Open Men’s Singles Final, Australian umpire John Blom will be the Chair Umpire.
John Blom to officiate his 3rd Australian Open Final
John Blom is one of the best umpires in the business and is one of only 25 worldwide ranked chair umpires active at the gold badge level. He started officiating with a gold badge in 2012 and was the Chair Umpire for the 2013 Australian Open Men’s Singles Final between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic.
3-years later, he also officiated the 2016 Australian Open Women’s Singles final between Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams where the German toppled the American legend. So, this will be Blom’s third grand slam final appearance as a chair umpire.
