‘Why do you harass him, why do you mistreat him,’ Serbian President questions Australian PM regarding Novak Djokovic treatment
Serbian President, Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic’s visa was cancelled for the second time on Friday, as the Minister of Immigration, Alex Hawke used his discretionary power. Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison backed the decision of the Immigration Minister, and highlighted the sacrifices made by the Australians in wake of the pandemic.
Serbian President, Aleksandar Vučić is unpleased with the treatment given to Novak Djokovic, and has questioned the Australian Prime Minister regarding the same. The President asked as to why Novak Djokovic was granted a medical exemption in the first place, and he sees conspiracy in stopping the Serbian from winning his 10th Australian Open title.
Aleksandar Vučić believes that Novak Djokovic has been harassed and mistreated in Australia, and he should have been told before that it was impossible to get a visa.
“If you wanted to forbid Novak Djokovic to win the [Australian Open] trophy for the 10th time, why didn’t you return him immediately, why didn’t you tell him that it was impossible to get a visa? Why do you harass him, why do you mistreat him, as well as his family and [a] nation that is free and proud?,” said the President.
Serbian President questions the intentions of Scott Morrison
Aleksandar Vucic believes that the entire plot has been created to win the hearts of the Australians just prior to the elections. Moreover, he stated that he has no shame in calling out the Prime Minister of one of the most respected countries in the world.
“Is all this necessary to win the elections and please your public? A president of a small country has appeared who has the courage to say that to one great prime minister of a large country — I can because I’m telling the truth and you know I’m telling the truth,” he added.
The President also questioned the judiciary in Australia, after Novak Djokovic’s was reinstated on Monday, and re-cancelled again on Friday. He believes that the Australian judiciary is irrelevant, and states that they keep on preaching about the law.
“Moreover, the Serbian President stated that the entire power is in the hands of the executives, as Alex Hawke overturned Novak Djokovic’s court hearing decision on Friday,” he added.
“They often preach to us about the rule of law. You can imagine what it would look like if a minister in Serbia annulled court decisions. “They showed us what an independent judiciary looks like, but they also showed us what an irrelevant judiciary looks like, because all the power there is in the hands of the executive,” the President continued.
