Find out: Why Jannik Sinner was reprimanded for unsportsmanlike conduct in Lyon
Jannik Sinner
Jannik Sinner is experiencing a breakthrough season on the ATP tour this year. The Italian sensation has already cracked into the top-20, owing to his consistent performances in the past few months.
Currently, the 19-year-old is playing the tournament in Lyon and will take on Arthur Rinderknech in the second round, later in the day. In his opening match, Sinner was put to the test and was forced to beat Aslan Karatsev in three sets.
Although Sinner won the match, he received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct. As per the rules, a player is booked for such behavior, but the World No.17 was lucky to escape without any fine.
Sinner unaware of the rule
After losing the first set 0-6, Sinner took a toilet break but reportedly didn’t pee. As a result, the chair umpire gave the youngster an official warning. After the completion of the match, Sinner apologized for the same but mentioned that he didn’t know that such a rule existed. “I didn’t know this rule, I will never do it again,” said Sinner in the post-match interview after the match.
Although Sinner’s apology was well received, the rule on ‘toilet break’ has been the talking point on various social media platforms. In the past, several players have been found guilty of taking toilet breaks to distract their opponents. Moreover, players have also used the toilet break as an opportunity to take a shower in the middle of a match.
