Will Daniil Medvedev become World No.1 if he wins the 2022 Australian Open?

Daniil Medvedev
On Friday, January 28, the current World no. 2 Daniil Medvedev prevailed over Stefanos Tsitsipas to enter the finals of the Australian Open 2022. Winning this title will increase Medvedev’s grand slam titles from 1 to 2. In 2021’s US Open, Medvedev grabbed his first grand slam title defeating Novak Djokovic ( 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 ), putting him on the 2nd rank in the men’s singles ranking after Djokovic. Medvedev spoke of Djokovic’s absence in the first grand slam of the year and his goal of surpassing and claiming the World Rank no.1.
Medvedev to become new No.1?

Another potential candidate for the top rank was the German player Alexander Zverev who, if he hadn’t lost to Denis Shapovalov in the fourth round ( 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 )and were able to win the title, would have taken the spot for World No.1. He was third in the ranking list after Medvedev with 7970 points.

Since Djokovic couldn’t compete in the Australian Open because of the vaccination situation, his ranking points which were at 11,015, will fall to 9015 as he won’t be able to defend his title from 2021. However, Medvedev, who was just behind with 8935 ranking points, has an excellent opportunity to cross the Serbian if he is able to win the grand slam title on January 30 against the Spanish 20-grand-slam winner Rafael Nadal.
This is the greatest chance for the Russian tennis player to grab the top seat in the men’s tennis ranking. If he manages to clinch the No.1 spot, he will become the 27th player to do so in tennis history. He will also become the first player outside the Big 4 to clinch the No.1 spot in almost 19 years!
