Serena Williams, 23-time Grandslam has been out of action since Wimbledon 2021, where she suffered a leg injury during her first round match. The American is chasing her elusive 24th major, which would put her alongside one of the game’s greats, Margaret Court, in terms of the number of Grandslam titles won.
Serena Williams won her last Grandslam title in Melbourne in 2017, and it has almost been five years since she claimed another one. Despite her absence on tour since the past couple of months, she is all set to compete at her home slam, US Open 2021. The last major of the year will commence from August 30 at the Flushing Meadows.
Serena Williams had earlier withdrawn from the Cincinnati Open, as she continues to recover from the leg injury she picked up at Wimbledon. Serena’s ranking has dropped to world number 21, due to her limited appearances on tour in the past year.
Serena Williams aims to lift her 24th major in front of home crowd
Serena Williams has gotten close to winning her 24th major on several occasions in the past few years. The American has lost two finals at US Open in the past three years. In 2018, she was defeated by the Japanese, Naomi Osaka in the finals in a controversial manner. In 2019, she was defeated by Bianca Andreescu in straight sets in the final.
Last year, she was ousted from the semifinals by her fierce rival, Victoria Azarenka, who ended as the runner-up to Naomi Osaka. Serena Williams has played just five tournaments this year, which includes all three Grandslams so far.
Her most noticeable performance came at the Australian Open earlier this year, where she managed to reach the semifinals. In the last four battle, she was defeated by Naomi Osaka in straight sets. At French Open 2021, she lost to Elena Rybakina in straight sets in the fourth round.
