‘Will talk to Serena Williams about the future after the 2021 US Open,’ says coach Patrick Mouratoglou

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams skipped the 2021 US Open with a hamstring injury that she picked up at the Wimbledon Championships. Unfortunately, after reaching the semifinals of the Australian Open, earlier in the year, the American has found going tough in the other Slams in 2021.
“After careful consideration and following the advice of my doctors and medical team, I have decided to withdraw from the US Open to allow my body to heal completely from a torn hamstring,” Williams announced on Instagram.
Although Serena did make an appearance at the French Open, she was ousted in the fourth round. What followed was very perhaps very unfortunate at the All England Club, where the 39-year-old injured her hamstring, even before she could get her first round underway.
Having missed the Tokyo Games and the US Open, it is unclear as to which way Serena’s future is heading. Meanwhile, the former World No.1’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou too didn’t give any clue during his chat to ESPN.
‘I don’t know if she’s done or if she wants to do one or two more years’: Mouratoglou
However, the French coach did mention that he will talk to his charge after the conclusion of the US Open and assess whether Serena still has the appetite to extend her career.
“[Serena is going through] stages where she needs to digest the fact she didn’t play here. And then it’s gonna be time to think about the future and what she wants to do. Nothing is decided. Everything is open. I don’t know if she’s done or if she wants to do one more year or two more years or whatever. I have no idea. So we’re gonna probably after the tournament sit down and talk about it.”
While the future around the legendary Serena looks uncertain, she is most likely to reappear on the tour at some point, going forward. For the year though, the American has only played 19 matches, across surfaces.
Serena last won a Grand Slam in the year 2017 in Australia and since then has been chasing the overall Grand Slam record of 24, which is currently held by Margaret Court in the women’s game.
